My Tiramisu Story 🍰

Growing up, I heard it all - "chubby," "fat," you name it. Those words stuck with me for years, making me overthink every bite and every treat. But here's the beautiful thing about midlife - you start caring less about what others think!

So here I am, making tiramisu from scratch, and loving every minute of it. Because I finally understand - being healthy isn't about saying no to everything delicious. It's about making choices that make YOU happy.

Want to join me in this delicious adventure? Here's my recipe (adapted from NY Times):

What You'll Need:

  • 6 large egg yolks

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1¼ cups heavy cream

  • 1½ cups mascarpone

  • 3 cups coffee (make it strong!)

  • 3 tablespoons rum

  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa

  • About 36 ladyfingers

  • 8x8 inch baking dish

  • Hand mixer

  • Sifter

Let's Create Magic:

1. Start by preparing your coffee and letting it cool in a deep container. Add rum - this will be your ladyfinger dipping mixture.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine egg yolks with ¾ cup of granulated sugar. Using a hand mixer, beat until the mixture has tripled in volume.

3. In another mixing bowl, mix the remaining sugar with heavy cream and mascarpone.

4. Gently fold the mascarpone mixture into the egg yolk mixture until well combined.

5. Take your 8x8 inch baking dish and use a sifter to dust the bottom with 1 tablespoon of cocoa.

6. Now for the fun part - assembly! Dip each ladyfinger in your coffee-rum mixture and place it (rounded side up) in the dish, starting from one corner. Continue until you've created a complete layer.

7. Spread one-third of your mascarpone mixture evenly over the ladyfingers.

8. Repeat the process twice more, creating two more layers of dipped ladyfingers and mascarpone cream.

9. Finally, dust the top with the remaining tablespoon of cocoa using your sifter.

10. Refrigerate and... voilà! Your homemade tiramisu is ready to be enjoyed!

The best part about midlife isn't just that we care less about others' opinions - it's that we finally start hearing our own voice. We start understanding what truly nourishes not just our body but our soul too.

Making tiramisu at home takes a bit more effort, but you know exactly what goes into it - less preservatives and artificial ingredients than store-bought versions, mostly just real, simple ingredients. And honestly? It tastes better too. Plus, there's something special about creating something with your own hands.

Sometimes it's a homemade tiramisu. Sometimes it's saying no to things that don't serve us anymore. Sometimes it's both!

As you're making this recipe, remember - it's not just about the dessert. It's about choosing joy. It's about being kind to yourself. It's about finding that sweet spot between taking care of yourself and actually enjoying life.
